Admitted members join COINS as junior analysts and undergo new member training, which is conducted by our faculty advisors and members.
Training starts in October and consists of a 3-credit A-F graded course that lasts until approximately halfway through the spring semester with mandatory meetings from 5:30 - 6:30 pm on Wednesdays and 2:30 - 3:30 pm on Fridays. Students need to complete the course with a grade of B or higher in order to become full members.
The topics for new member training include the basics and operations of futures/options/ETF/ETN markets, fundamental and technical analysis, trade thesis formulation and execution, fundamentals of agricultural, energy and metal markets, statistics and modeling, professional development, as well as simulated trading.
Upon successful completion of this training course in the spring semester, students become analysts on specific commodities in the COINS portfolio or quantitative research division, which are assigned based on personal interests and the current needs of the group.

Members trade pitches, then voted on by the group before being approved.
Training meeting
Fridays
2:30 - 3:30 pm
Topics could be industry expert guest speakers, internal training sessions, professional development activities, etc.
Division meeting
Once a week
Usually on Mondays
The expected time commitment for COINS members is around 10-15 hours per week divided between market research and analysis and in-person meetings.
